I have read many other books by Thomas Sowell and he must be good because of the vituperation that the left throws at him. It appears that the statists just don't get it, they still think that emotions can beat a reasoned argument. Here are the reasoned arguments that tear apart the left's emotions.I highly recommend this book as well as his two more scholarly books on economics, Basic Economics 3rd Ed: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy and Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One. Perhaps progressives should start with these so that they get a basic understanding of economics before they start commenting about the other Sowell books.
Wonderful book. I would recommend to any interested in better understanding what empirical economic evidence has to say about a number of interesting (and sometimes controversial) topics. Thomas Sowell's writing style is awesome.
Often times, writers feel the need to write vaguely and equivocally - most probably due to a lack of confidence in their knowledge and to cover up the carelessness of their thought patterns. Sowell's was his Chapter Three argument that male and female income discrepancies have a plethora of explanations that extend far beyond the sophomoric liberal proclamations of "Sexism." and "Discrimination." Sowell's academically nuanced look at the issue absolutely trashes the notion that discrimination can be blamed for women, who are educated to the exact same level as men, earning 30% less than their male counterparts. Thomas Sowell incredibly knowledgeable but he is also commendably lucid in his writing. Before reviewing the book, it must be said that Thomas Sowell is an intellectual trailblazer. Sowell is not swimming in Pulitzer Prizes and honorary degrees from every top institution in the world is undoubted evidence of the preposterousness of the idea that universities are politically neutral places that are welcoming of diverse opinions and open debate. Sowell destroys these notions with formidable logic and erudite prose. The most insightful analysis of Dr.
Dr.
Thomas Sowell thinks profoundly and can convey his ideas clearly and eloquently.
This book is a powerful antidote to popular economic liberal lies, and it arms readers with a smorgasbord of useful facts that would enable them to hang in an economic debate with even the most adept liberal sophists.
Not only is Dr.
This is one of his most powerful chapters. It is a shame that liberals are so concerned with pushing an agenda that they continue to promulgate patent falsities about economics.
Not many writers can boast of having that ability. The book's premise is essentially a systematic dismantling of the economic canards that are invariably disseminated by the Left.
The main theme that I took away from the book is that liberals refuse to research issues deeply enough to find adequate explanations for economic quagmires; rather, they prefer to simplistically use buzz words like "discrimination," "racism," and "sexism" as explanations for all economic differences and problems.
The fact that Dr.
To the contrary, universities have long been overtly hostile to conservatives and unapologetic citadels of liberal thought.
I would read little bits to them and the next thing you know, they wanted it when I was done with it. In todays ecomomy you hear about economics and economist all the time but do you really know what that means. I will read more from Dr. This book while having a topic which I would normally have found boring was an amazing read. I had people at work who saw me reading a book on economics and thought I had gone looney. Thomas Sowell. He makes what appears to be a difficult subject so simple to understand.
Thomas Sowell is an excellent author and thinker. "Economic Facts and Fallacies" presents some excellent insights into fallacies that are often accepted as fact in American society. This book is the concise presentation of well developed thoughts.
